Disabled American Veterans Salt City Chapter #43 provides rides for veterans needing to get to medical appointments. The transportation to and back home from VA arranged medical appointments is free to the veteran.
The DAV Chapter in Manistee has 3 vans that are used to provide rides. These rides are for veterans living near Manistee. That includes Manistee, Benzie, Mason, Wexford, Lake, Mecosta, Missaukee and Osceola counties.
During 2016 our vans were driven more than 100,000 miles. The volunteer drivers donated more than 24,000 hours of their time helping veterans.
These rides for veterans are provided only for medical appointments that are arranged by the Veterans Administration. Appointments can be at VA clinics and medical centers located in Traverse City, Grayling, Muskegon, Battle Creek, Grand Rapids, Saginaw, Ann Arbor and Detroit. VA arranged appointments may also be at medical facilities other than those operated by the VA.
All veterans are eligible for this free ride service. Call the Manistee County Veterans Counselor Office at 231 398 3587, one week or more, before your appointment to arrange a ride. Call early to make sure transportation will be available.
This DAV service program for veterans is paid for by donations. Donations and volunteer drivers are needed to keep the program going. Drivers do not need to be veterans to volunteer. Call the Manistee County Veterans Counselor Office for more information about becoming a volunteer van driver.
